Fishing

Four Geese Reservoir is the main body of water in our territory and most of the fishing is done on major rivers, lakes, brooks feeding the Reservoir or in the Bays and Inlets on the Reservoir itself. Fly Fishing is highly recommended for Brook Trout, Splake, Northern Pike and landlocked Salmon because of the tremendous action these hardy freshwater fish provide. Bait and lure fishing is also quite productive, especially for Lakers (Lake Trout). In fact, as the water temperature rises in the summer months, trolling is suggested over fly fishing especially for the Trophy fish. So call for water conditions before leaving home.

 Plentiful freshwater species include:

Northern Pike (Brochet du Nord)

Four Geese Outfitters caters to fly fishermen who want to cast big streamers and terrestrials in small bays and inlets around the Reservoir. Each guide is familiarized with this ferocious game fish's feeding habits. The average weight of the Northern Pike is 5 to 10 pounds. But the occasional 30 + pounder will scare the heck out of you when it grabs a 3/0 mouse fly 10 feet in front of you with such a force and ferocity that you will remember this champion of game fish for the rest of your life - Guaranteed.

Lake Trout (Touladie)

The Lake trout is the heaviest species fished on the Reservoir and rivers of the Ourtardes Quatre Reservoir (Four Geese Reservoir). This fish offers great fly fishing opportunities throughout the year in the 6 to 10 pound class and takes streamers easily. The bigger fish are caught mostly in spring and fall because these fish dislike the warmer summer water conditions and head for the deep regions of the reservoir. However, some big Lakers head for the cold rivers that enter the Reservoir and there, a fly fishermen can test his equipment with these 35 pound + giants.

Brook Trout (Mouchete)

This fish is the most beautiful of all freshwater fish in Quebec. In late August these beauties change to their spawning colors, the big males with their hook kype and bright orange bellies will impress the pure Brook trout fanatic. The average Brook trout is 1 to 2 pounds with the occasional 5 to 8 pounder in some remote lakes and rivers. Every type of Fly fishing from dry to wet is possible to lure this most beautiful of all freshwater species.

Landlocked Salmon (Ouananiche)

The king of freshwater fish is the Atlantic salmon (salmo salar). It's smaller brother, the Landlocked Salmon cannot swim to spawn in the ocean because of natural barriers that occurred during the melting of the last ice age. The landlocked salmon is called Ouananiche in Quebec and its flesh is second to none in taste. Fly fishing for this leaping king will capture your heart, even if its size is not that of a true giant.

Lake Whitefish

Local fishermen usually ignore this species, but it offers its share of action. Its tiny fragile mouth demands a delicate hook setting with a #10 or smaller fly, but your drag better be at a minimum because these fish can weigh up to 15 pounds. Freshwater Lake Whitefish are a plentiful and good-eating species despite local biases..

Splake (Moulac, Wendigo)

Splake is a bred cross between Lake Trout and Brook Trout. It offers the same sport as the Brook trout and is usually bigger and fatter. Great fun and eating with these big fellas.

Fishing season runs from May 15 to September 15, with the exception of Northern Pike which may be fished year round. A nonresident Fishing license is mandatory and will cost $52.00 CAD plus tax upon arrival.
